Geosite details
The white cliffs that you can see when you look across the Channel from England are known as Cap Blanc Nez (‘White Nose Cape’) and are geologically almost identical to their English counterparts. Cap Blanc Nez and the White Cliffs of Dover were part of the same ridge of Chalk hills until the Channel megaflood severed their connection 450,000 years ago.
The Blanc Nez is a stunning spot to enjoy views across the Channel to England (the view of the White Cliffs is much clearer than from England!), as well as across the Bay of Wissant to Cap Gris Nez. You will also find the prominent Dover Patrol monument at the top of the Blanc Nez (this is one of a pair, with the other found above the cliffs at St Margaret’s in Kent).
Cap Blanc Nez is one half of the ‘Grand Site des Deux Caps’, one of just 41 sites in France to have been awarded the ‘Grand Site de France’ label. The ‘Grand Site’ label recognises and protects natural monuments and sites of artistic, historic, legendary or picturesque character.
