About Maison Dieu, Dover
Maison Dieu, meaning ‘House of God,’ was founded in 1203 as a hospital for pilgrims traveling to Canterbury. Over the centuries, it has served many roles, including town hall, courthouse, and community hub. The building is renowned for its medieval architecture, particularly the elaborate grotesques and carved details reflecting both local and cross-channel influences. Constructed from local flint and stone, Maison Dieu demonstrates the geological heritage of the Dover area, connecting architecture, culture, and landscape.
Recently restored with careful attention to its historical features, Maison Dieu now serves as a vibrant cultural and educational space, hosting exhibitions, events, and workshops for all ages.
