The cross-Channel Geopark, spanning both France (Parc naturel régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale) and England (Kent Downs National Landscape), is an exceptional territory shaped by a millennia-old history, breathtaking landscapes, and a unique geological wealth.

Several sites within the Geopark are already listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites or are currently seeking designation. These remarkable places are invitations to discover cultural, natural, and memorial heritage alike.

🌿 The Audomarois Marsh Biosphere Reserve

Recognized by UNESCO since 2013, the Audomarois Marsh Biosphere Reserve, managed by the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Nature Park, is a living landscape where human traditions coexist with exceptional biodiversity. Shaped by generations of market gardeners, the marsh is today a place for walks, discovery, and environmental awareness.

⚰️ The Wimereux Military Cemetery

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023 as part of the series “Funerary and Memorial Sites of the First World War”, this unique place of remembrance is remarkable for its landscaped setting and the horizontal arrangement of its graves. It is also the resting place of Lord Edward Thomas Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).

⛪Canterbury Cathedral

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Canterbury Cathedral is a jewel of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Bearing witness to England’s religious and cultural history, the cathedral, the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, and St Martin’s Church (the oldest in England) form a unique ensemble, emblematic of key milestones in the history of Christianity in Britain.

St Augustine’s Abbey was built, among other materials, with stone from the Marquise quarry basin, already highly prized in the 11th century for the construction and decoration of many buildings.

🚶 The Via Francigena

This historical route links Canterbury to Rome. It crosses the English Channel and winds through the diverse landscapes of the Transmanche Geopark. Designated a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, it is currently being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status.

👉 The Geopark fully supports this initiative, which highlights a heritage of walking, spirituality, geology, and intercultural encounters.

🏯 Fort d’Ambleteuse

Built by Vauban at the mouth of the Slack River, Fort d’Ambleteuse has proudly overlooked the sea for over 300 years. It is proposed as an extension to the UNESCO series “Major Vauban Sites Network.”.

👉 This strategic site embodies the connection between military heritage and coastal geodiversity. Its designation would allow better protection and interpretation of this remarkable site for today’s and future visitors.
