Geosite details
The Cap Blanc-Nez is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Opal Coast, attracting thousands of visitors every year thanks to its breathtaking scenery and rich biodiversity. The chalk cliffs, which rise 134 meters above sea level, are the result of a complex geological process that dates back to the Cretaceous period, when marine organisms left their remains in the depths of the ocean. As you walk along the marked trails, you’ll have the opportunity to admire impressive rock formations and observe migratory birds such as peregrine falcons and seagulls.
The panoramic view from the cape is simply spectacular: on a clear day, it is possible to see the English coast. This site is also a place steeped in history, as it has been the scene of many maritime events over the centuries. There is also a memorial monument, the “Dover Patrol” which pays tribute to the soldiers who defended the strait during the First World War. The same memorial exists on the other side of the Channel on the cliffs at St. Margaret’s.
