Geosite details
The main feature of the reserve are the former gravel pits which have been filled to form huge lakes, which attract a huge array wildlife. This reserve is the first former gravel pit site ever to be converted for the benefit of nature, setting a blueprint for many other similar sites around the country to follow.
The wildlife that you’ll come across here includes damselflies, dragonflies, bats, glow-worms and all sorts of plant life, but there’s no question that birds are the stars of the show. A huge variety of ducks and wading birds, as well as herons, kingfishers and reed warblers, are just some of our feathered friends you are likely to spot.
Kent Wildlife Trust manage this reserve and there is an excellent array of facilities, not least the Jeffrey Harrison Visitor Centre, which has lots of information about the reserve and the wildlife you can find here, as well as a cafe and shop. Most of the site is wheelchair accessible, including the visitor centre, three bird hides and the majority of the nature trail.
