Geosite details
Rising 45 meters high, the cliffs of Cap Gris-Nez were formed 150 million years ago (Jurassic), at a time when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. The site was then covered by the sea, at the bottom of which sediments gradually deposited to form the cliffs. These same Jurassic formations can be seen along the coast all the way to Cap d’Alprech, south of Boulogne-sur-Mer. To discover:
- Cap Gris-Nez
- Cran aux oeufs
- Cran poulet
- Pointe au Oies
- Pointe de la Crèche
- Cap d’Alprech
- Forts d’Alprech, de l’Heurt, de Couppes
- Vallon de Ningles
Cap Gris-Nez has historical importance, being a strategic point of maritime surveillance. Visitors can enjoy information about local history through explanatory panels scattered along the paths. In addition, the site is surrounded by fields of wildflowers, which adds to its natural charm.
